Let's Make Soy Candles! How To Quick Guide

So a friend of mine has recently discovered the thrill of making candles, instead of buying them! As women, we tend to love pretty things and things that smell nice, so combining the two to create a great gift/must have for the home is great.

I am a big fan of the Yankee Candles because they last for a long time and their fragrance is always so vibrant and strong. Today I have stepped into the world of creating my own, and it was fun and easy!

I purchased 2kg of soy wax (this has a lower melting point to other waxes and doesn't result in 'sooting' against the pot when burning), 20 wicks, 6 essential oils and recycled some cute ceramic pots I had in the cupboard from some wonderful puddings bought in Waitrose over the past few months. I had 5 orange pots, 3 blue and 2 clear, so I thought I would do one aroma in the orange pots and another in the blue and clear :-)

I poured the wax into 1 pot to work out the amount needed, and then doubled it. When weighing the wax in its pre-melted state it weighed 50g, so I doubled it to 100g. For the 10 pots I had I only need 1kg of soy wax, so there would be another kilo of soy wax and spare wicks for another day.

I put 10 wicks into the 10 pots and held them in place with wooden skewers.

I melted 500g of the wax in a pyrex jug for about 6 minutes on a medium-high heat in the microwave and it was done! For the orange jars I blended bergamot, sweet orange and vanilla essential oils to create a blend I've called Sweet Memories. I used about 24 drops of bergamot, 12 drops of sweet orange and 20 drops of vanilla. I stirred this through the wax with a wooden skewer to combine the frangrances and then poured into the pots. Once done I realigned the wicks as some had moved when pouring, and left them to set.

I then repeated the process for the blue and clear pots, which I did with 20 drops of rosemary, 10 drops of peppermint and 18 drops of lavender to create a blend I've called Atlantic Breeze.

I've now left the candles to set for 12 hours, trimmed the wicks and then will leave them for 2 full days before lighting them. It's a fab, quick process, which will make great birthday or Christmas gifts, and being homemade, they are of course cheaper than the shops. For these 10 candles, because I used pots I already had, these cost me about £2.20 each to make - yay!

How to... Make a Date Jar and Date Ideas!

So today I set about jazzing up mine and my partner's dating life! I think we can all get stuck in the same rut of doing the same things together - cinema, dinner, go for a walk, go bowling, etc! So I set about buying bits n bobs on eBay and making a date jar!

The total cos of this mini-project was only around £3.93 plus some imagination and took about 2 hours altogether. I got the jar free from work, it is only a small jar, holding about 280g of chutney previously, but I've found others online for only a few pounds each.

So here's what I started with:

I made my date list, using the usuals we like to do plus some different things we wouldn't normally think of doing. I also made 5 categories to match the 5 different set of coloured wooden sticks I had and I allocated them each to one of the five categories!

Here are our date ideas:
Cinema
Go out for dinner
Have a takeaway
Cook together
Go on a picnic
Have a movie night in
Go shopping together
See a play
Have a massage night
Play video games
Listen to music together
Take the train/bus to London for the day
Go away somewhere new for the weekend
Go to Aqua Sana
Bake together
Play cards together
Work on a project together
Go go-karting
Go for a long walk
Watch the sun set
Make an ice cream sundae
Go to the zoo
Go to an arcade
Go bowling
Go to a comedy night
Make a romantic dinner at home
Go camping
Visit a food market
Try a new place for dinner
Visit a historic site nearby
Pottery/painting pottery
Visit a photo booth
Stargazing on a clear night
Visit an art museum
Go to an amusement park
Visit the aquarium
Play mini golf
Do a jigsaw puzzle
Recommend a book for each other and read them
Go to Stour Head
Road trip
Watch a documentary
Have a night of tickle back and chatting
Go to Splashdown
Chips and a walk on the beach
Go to a car boot
TV series marathon
Play badminton/tennis
Learn Origami
Pamper night at home

I then went about writing the date ideas on the sticks, followed by attaching a key to the jar, so we knew what coloured stick to pick depending on budget, time of year, etc.

And then to tie it up with some natural jute cord/twine :-) it looks fun and I can't wait to get down to choosing which stick first for our date! The best bit is whilst we can pick the category we don't know what activity it will be, and theres no putting it back if we dont feel in the mood.

Fly Me To.... Majorca (Mallorca Si?!)

Good morning people, I have returned from my mini-break with my friend!

To sum it up: good relaxation, great weather and even better company! There is nothing quite like jetting off for a short trip to lie under the sun and experience a touch of the Spanish language. If it were France one might say "Ooh-la-la" - I don't know what the Spanish version of this might be.

Both me and my friend wanted a cheap and cheerful break to somewhere not so far for 5 days, I searched for weeks and ended up avoiding a package holiday, instead choosing to book with Easyjet (because, you know, you can take your mini suitcase to save cost and not have to wait at the other end of the flight for the baggage to come through), searching for a good hotel that is not too pricey (I recommend searching with Trivago or Hotels Combined) and then searching for transfers on various local websites for the best deal, I recommend 3-4 so you can get a good range of quotes!

The best part is this trip only cost us £196 each, with a half board hotel (breakfast and dinner included) - the hotel was also an adults only hotel yay! So no screaming children splashing you :-)

Don't be afraid to book components separately - it's not as scary as it sounds and probably worked out £200 cheaper each so proves it's definitely worth investigating.

Alas please find some snaps below of my trip, Mallorca es muy hermoso!

Shaftesbury Festival 2014 - Gold Hill Cheese Race

What a fantastic day! I hope everyone else has had a great day today, especially as it started miserable and grey and has turned our sunny, warm and clear blue skies.

We had Shaftesbury Festival today, which is a really fab town event, everyone seems to get involved. I always thought it might be 5 stalls selling arts and crafts, but I was wrong. I went last year and was blown away by how 'all-out' the town goes. Food, clothing, crafts and gift stalls fill the high street and on Park Walk (a footpath area with an incredible view) even more to do, things for the kids including face painting and games, and even cookery demonstrations. This year when I saw the dates it was on I had it down as a must immediately.

I took lots of photos to show the treats we had in store :-)

This is Park Walk with lots of stalls, lots of local produce!

These cupcakes we a must try and they were wonderul! www.bryscupcakes.co.uk

Bought a selection of goodies from the Godminster Organic stall for Charlie as he was working all day. Here we have their fruit cake, chutney, digestive biscuits and heart shaped waxed cheddar - 4 of the best products by one of the best local companies! www.godminster.com

And finally these photos are from the big cheese races that take place. GIANT cheeses weighing about 20kg are donated by a local company and from 11:30 a cheese race happens every hour. The contestants have to each carry their cheese down the bottom of the famous landmark Gold Hill (from the Hovis advert many years ago) and race to the top! It sounds silly, yet a lot of people come to watch and a lot of people volunteer to take part!

It's wonderful having such a great local community that we can make these events possible, and the sunshine definitely helped make it even more enjoyable today :-)

Thanks for reading, be back soon!
